Operation Paperback on Facebook |
Tonight, I'm taking a look at a list sent out by Operation Paperback. It's a wish list of books that members of our armed forces would like to read, and I thought you all might be interested. I know that there are so many wonderful non-profits out there, but here's another one to consider. Our troops are in different parts of the world -- in the cold or heat, from Afghanistan to Uzbekistan and everywhere in between. They'd like to read some of the good books out there that you and I are fortunate enough to be able to go to the store and easily pick up, or check out at the library. Thanks to them, we have options.
So here's what a typical list can look like. And if you want to participate, go ahead and sign up to contribute the next time around. I'm sure it would be appreciated.

What a wonderful cause! I'm going to sift through Mr. Weekly Bite's collection. He's got hundreds of political thrillers I'm sure the solders would love :)
ReplyDeleteThis is such a wonderful cause and I am eager to support it. I am going to have to look over what I have and what I can get for them. Thanks so much for posting this!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this! My husband and I were deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 101st Airborne Division 2003-2004 and I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to receive books from organizations like this. Going to check it out and see if anyone needs any historical fiction or classics....
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this great program. My son's school sends a package every year.
ReplyDeleteEstela @ Weekly Bite -- I'm sure he has a ton of books that can be donated! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteZibilee @ Raging Bibliomania -- Any donation will be greatly appreciated!
Holly @ Bippity Boppity Book -- First -- thanks to you and your husband for your service! The Coffee and a Book Chick family value and appreciate your contributions! My husband also served as did my sister and brother-in-law as well, so I know that the dedication and sacrifice you have performed is great. Thank you!!
marthalama @ Hey, I Want to Read That! -- How fabulous that your son's school contributes!! I love it when schools do that -- yet another fabulous way to teach about giving back!
What a great post! I've never even heard of this before.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful cause! Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
ReplyDeleteShort Story Slore -- Thanks for stopping by and I encourage you to stop on by to Operation Paperback's site!
ReplyDeleteMrs. Q: Book Addict -- You are very welcome! Thanks for stopping by!
This is such a wonderful cause. Another one I heard of at work was collection of packages of new socks as they soldiers have to toss (not able to wash)their socks.
ReplyDelete(Diane) Bibliophile by the Sea -- I haven't heard of that cause and didn't know that the troops had to get new ones all the time! Oh, my goodness - I will definitely look it up!
ReplyDeleteI loved Ender's Game, one of my all time favorites! There is actually a whole series that I hope to continue reading someday... The copy I have actually belongs to my cousin's wife, but her family also serves and maybe she would support my donating it to the troops? Doesn't hurt to ask!
ReplyDeleteI also read the first of the Sookie Stackhouse books, I wonder what I did with that copy? I hope I haven't already passed it on so I can send it to the troops.
I'll have to check out some of the others on the list to broaden my horizons!
Great idea - I'm going to go check this out!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting about this fantastic cause! I'm going to look through my books and see if I have enough to sign up. I think a good book might be even more comforting to the troops than food!
ReplyDeleteErika @ The Black Dog Gang -- Ender's Game is fantastic! I've only read it once about 10 years ago, but that ending STILL sticks with me!
ReplyDeleteAmused -- I love what this organization does! Have fun in searching through the lists of wished for books!
Roving Reader -- Thanks for stopping by and for helping out with the organization! I know it will be appreciated!
Thanks for this post - I will spend time this weekend to review the list and see if I own any of the books (will buy a few too). The previous owners left us about 500 books that I'm try to find a home for, this would be a wonderful solution.
ReplyDeleteI've sent one or two boxes through Operation Paperback and even have a box at work collecting novels for the cause. Having been an Army wife, I hold our deployed troops near and dear to my heart. Thanks for promoting such a wonderful organization!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this! What an incredible cause!
ReplyDeleteMari -- Oh, so much fun! Thanks for checking into what you have, it will be greatly appreciated for this organization!
ReplyDeleteMichelle -- How fantastic! And you as an Army wife know how important these organizations are! Thank you!
Sheila (Bookjourney) -- Thank you also and please pass my thanks especially to your son for the work he does as a member of the military! Happy Holidays!!
I love how a book can take me to a far away land, even if just for an hour or two. I would love to contribute to a cause that gives our troops that same experience. Thanks for spreading the word!
ReplyDeleteI find it kind of interesting that a lot of their choices are books about war. You'd think they would want an escape? I guess that is what the Sookie Stackhouse books are for! Thanks for calling this to our attention and giving us a way to learn more.
ReplyDeletenat, this is SO terrific. thank you for posting about it. my hubby and i have sent some care packages over the last few years and this sounds like another great way to make a small difference. i'm off to check out the site! thanks for linking this.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Kathleen: Most of the war books are actually on the required-reading lists of several services. They are used in leadership and advancement training. Believe it or not, ENDERS GAME and STARSHIP TROOPERS are among those required books. I have been volunteering with Operation Paperback for more than six years, and I have relished every minute of it :o)
